Ingredients: Carbonated Water, cane sugar, caramel color, natural and artificial flavoring, cinnamon, ginger, vanilla extract, phosphoric acid, sodium benzoate added as preservative.

Just past the Fall Equinox, winding down the Root Beer project to make time for other pursuits. (Hint: They involve Toddy Sticks, Loggerheads, and Cask Ales.)

A Word From Chef Gale Gand:

“I love root beer!” While cooking in England some years ago, my root beer sources dried up and I was forced to do without. So I got a little brown terrier puppy and named him Rootie. When Rootie and I got back to the United States I started making my own root beer to serve in my restaurants. Now I’m pleased to present my best batch ever! Rootie and I know you’ll love it. Enjoy!

Like the Caamaño Bros. High Noon Sarsaparilla, the initial flavors here are very Cola-like. Mid tastes are thin and the late flavors primarily birch and wintergreen with a touch of vanilla very late.

Awesome label and a great story. On the plus side, this isn’t super sweet, but still, I wanted to like this Root Beer more than I actually did.

Ingredients: Carbonated Water, Sugar and/or High Fructose Corn Syrup, Caramel Color, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Gum Acacia, Citric Acid.

Definitely a classic Root Beer, and definitely a Wintergreen heavy entry. Not as sweet as many big commercial Root Beers, which makes it more drinkable. Definitely went well with the Sandwich below…

CONTAINS: Triple-Filtered Carbonated Water, Pure Cane Sugar, Caramel Color, Natural and Artificial Flavor, Citric Acid, Sodium Benzoate (A Preservative), Yucca Extractives, and Acacia.

“When you’re bad for something mighty good, reach for a foamy mug of Kutztown Root Beer! Tastes chust like old-fashioned, ’cause you know we make it that way. Drink ’til you ouch. there’s more back!”

I think I’m tired of Caramel Color and Wintergreen, about the only Root Beer that I can face is the stuff I make myself.

By all accounts, this isn’t a bad Root Beer, more well balanced than most commercial brands, but I’m just about Root Beered out.

I don’t think I can be fair-ish anymore, I’m just tired of drinking the stuff.

Still, I don’t think it is a 4 Barrel Root Beer.

Ingredients: Carbonated Water, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Quillaia Extract, Caramel Color, Red #40, Citric Acid, and Sodium Benzoate (To Preserve Flavor).

Yow, quite a shock to go back to commercial Root Beer after mostly drinking home-made for a few days.

I struggle to find anything other than Wintergreen in this Root Beer, it’s a full on Wintergreen bomb. I get some vanilla and other flavors later, but mostly in after-taste.

The folks at the Fizzary said this was a favorite among many of their Root Beer buying customers. I guess Wintergreen is popular with the kids. To me, it’s too much.

Virgil’s Root Beer

Contains: Purified, Carbonated Water, unbleached cane sugar, herbs, spices, and citric acid.

“Virgil’s is a superb blend of Spices & Herbs gathered from the world over; Anise, Licorice, Vanilla (Bourbon), Cinnamon, Clove, Wintergreen, Sweet Birch, Molasses, Nutmeg, Pimento Berry Oil and Oil of Cassia.”

A great ingredient list makes me really want to like Virgil’s Root Beer, but for some reason I don’t.

There’s nothing wrong with it, and it is plenty tasty, but there’s just something about it I can’t quite put my finger on that keeps it from being a great Root Beer.

3 1/2 out of 5 Barrels, for me. It might be a 5 Barrel Root Beer for you.

Ingredients: Sparkling Filtered Water, Evaporated Cane Juice, Natural Flavors, Bourbon Vanilla Extract, Anise, Sarsaparilla, Licorice Root, Birch Oil, Wintergreen Oil, Caramel Color, Phosphoric Acid.

Really reminds me of the Root Beer I grew up drinking, mostly A&W.

Smooth, but I’d like more complexity and body.

Ingredients: Purified Carbonated Water, Cane Sugar, Organic and Natural Flavorings, Caramel Color, Organic Acacia Gum, Citric Acid.

“Our sarsaparilla is made the old-fashioned way, with 100% natural traditional ingredients. Many of these ingredients are now hard to find, and almost everyone else uses artificial replacements. We worked long and hard to find sources for de-safrolized sassafrass, imported Jamaican sarsaparilla root, and our other quality ingredients, so that we could deliver you an old-fashioned honest taste that’s been hard to find anywhere for over 50 years.”

Initial flavors remind me more of a Cola than a Root Beer, with a semi-sour flavor. Maybe too much citric acid?

Late flavors include vanilla and wintergreen, but are fairly subtle.

Who are these Brothers?

At 15, I was mowing lawns, delivering newspapers, and selling soft-drinks at Badger Football games to make my comic book money. Wow, and these kids have already launched a small business.

Just awesome, that is one very expensive lemonade stand, Mom and Dad.

I like the attitude, but the unusual Cola-like flavor puts this down to 3 out of 5 Barrels for me.
