A lot of discussion regarding the None But the Brave Cocktail lately.
It’s in the cocktaildb, so that usually means it comes from “Stan Jones’ Bar Guide”.
The recipe in Mr. Jones’ book:
None But the Brave
1 1/2 oz Brandy
1/2 oz Pimento Dram
1/4 oz Lemon Juice
1/4 oz Jamaica Rum
1/4 tsp. sugar
Cocktail Glass Shake
Classic cocktails turning up in Stan Jones usually means the recipe came from Patrick Gavin Duffy’s Mixer’s Manual.
But it isn’t in the 1934 edition.
The first place I find it turning up, rather oddly, is the 1956 version of Patrick Gavin Duffy’s “Official Mixer’s Manual” revised and updated by James Beard.
Interestingly, the recipe in that book is:
None but the Brave
2/3 Brandy
1/3 Pimento Dram
1 Teaspoon Powdered Sugar
1 Dash of Jamaica Ginger
1 Dash Lemon Juice
Shake well with ice and strain into glass.
“Jamaica Ginger” turned into “Jamaica Rum”! That’s quite a change! Oh that Stan Jones, always messing with recipes!
